If there is one thing that can be said about retiring to New Zealand, it is that there can be absolutely no better place in the world to play golf. The gorgeous scenery and wide-open spaces are perfect for a day on the course no matter where you are.
This is especially true throughout the Bay of Plenty region, where there are many fantastic golf courses. In fact, this particular region of the country is well-known for having a place where you can play the holes on every street corner. But with so many spots to choose from, how can you know which ones will make for the best day out?
Not to worry, we at the Vines at Bethlehem are long-time locals and know the best spots around. Here’s our carefully curated list of favourite golf spots in the region for a great day on the course!
Tauranga Golf Club
An 18-hole championship course with a lot to offer its visitors, the Tauranga Golf Club is not one to miss. The green fees are reasonable for anyone without a membership, but attaining a membership is also well-worth its due consideration as it provides many excellent perks.
The grounds of the TGA Club are beautifully-groomed and well-kept, with holes that are challenging but fun all the same. And when you’re done on the course, you can bring it inside to their Club House Café & Bar, where, to put it as they do, “fabulous food is par for the course”.
The TGA golf course is the ideal place to take an entire day to enjoy the scenery, and make it an outing you can do whenever the need strikes you.
Omanu Golf Club
The Omanu Golf Club was established in 1971 and has since established a reputation as one of the best golfing experiences in the Bay of Plenty. With mostly flat fairways and excellent clubhouse facilities, it makes for a great course for both the experienced golfer and the newcomer. Take a casual day out on the green with a few friends and try to hit on par, or engage a pro-teacher to brush up on your skills and start hitting birdies.
If you’re more of an experienced golfer, then keep your eye on the calendar of events here. The Omanu GC enters teams into every category they can during the yearly pennant competitions. 2015 saw them win four interclub titles – Men’s, Ladies’, Senior and Intermediate championships – and they have been working towards more every year since.
Mt Maunganui Golf Club
Set up ten minutes from the Tauranga CBD, you can enjoy a quiet, relaxing game of golf on a fantastically manicured course at Mt Maunganui Golf Club. The club includes an 18-hole premier course, and features an outstanding Pro Shop, coaching facilities, as well as a championship layout that lets visitors and casual golfers test their skills. In addition, they offer the most affordable green fees on our list, and is the perfect setting for golfers of all levels.
